The Weakley County Sheriff’s Department received a NRA (National Rifle Association) Grant in the amount of $11,750 to upgrade the Sheriff’s Office firing range.

At the Public Safety meeting held on Thursday, September 5, Sheriff Terry McDade spoke on receiving the grant and stated that the current firing range was nothing more than a hill of dirt and that it had been like that for many years now. McDade stated that he had been looking for a grant to cover the project for many years now but had not found one until this year.

The total projected cost for the project is $51,000 and McDade said that the Department could cover it with the grant along with the sale of a vehicle that was wrecked and their past auction of guns and cars. The Department received $15,800 for the wrecked vehicle and $25,000 from the auction making their total amount $52,550.

McDade said that there is no match for the grant and no public monies being used for the project.

The NRA Law Enforcement Range Fund was established in 2024 as a matching grant program to encourage city and county governments, and state or federal agencies, to work with NRA on efforts to build and improve law enforcement ranges across the United States. At the NRA’s sole discretion, grants are awarded to qualifying city, county, state or federal agencies to assist with the development and improvement of law enforcement firearms ranges. Grants are also awarded to assist qualifying agencies or local governments with projects designed to improve community relations and to address environmental issues related to range operations.
