Weakley County School Board Discusses Visitor Code of Conduct, Approves Hosting Bradford Special School District as Co-op

The Weakley County School board discussed their visitor code of conduct at their August board meeting. Director of Schools Jeff Cupples stated that the code of conduct did not have to be voted on and  put into policy due to the code of conduct being procedural, however the law stated that the board’s attorney had to okay the code of conduct.

The code of conduct states that if someone is on school property that you have to behave and if you don’t, you will be escorted out-that goes for adults and students. The code of conduct discusses things such as the use of profanity, speaking to students that are not your own, and more. A more updated version will be available at the September board meeting once it receives attorney approval.

According to Cupples that would include searching someone on premise, however the schools don’t typically search adults, instead using an SRO if there was an issue. A letter will be sent home with students once the code of conduct is approved for parents to sign.

Weakley County Schools also approved Greenfield School football to host as co-op with Braford Special School District, however this will need to be approved by the Bradford Special School District’s School Board before going into effect. Greenfield School presented to Bradford School Board regarding what the process would look like. There are 17 students who don’t have an opportunity to participate in football at Bradford High School and those students could come to Greenfield and play co-op.

According to the play-by-play law, both principals have to agree and then both boards have to agree. The Greenfield principal has made a recommendation to their school board and are at this point awaiting their response. This would only be for football and no other sport.

The next school board meeting will be held September 5 at 5 p.m. at the Personal Development Center in Dresden.

MEAL POLICY CHANGE-Changes were made to the meal policy-teachers are no longer able to eat free breakfast at Weakley County Schools. According to Director of Schools Jeff Cupples, the schools were approved for the CPD program so that all students eat breakfast and lunch for free, however, when that program was implemented on a trial run, because the teachers were serving students they were allowed to eat free, but now that cannot happen. This policy was passed on the first reading.

GLEASON SCHOOL-Gleason School will now have Middle School Baseball as a sport. 25 Junior High boys were interested in the program and two coaches agreed to coach the program so no additional personnel would be needed.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE-The board approved two foreign exchange students for the 2024/25 school year. One student from Germany will attend Westview and one student from Spain will attend Westview.

FIELD TRIPS-The board approved all band trips, CTE trips, athletic trips, special education trips and the Westview FFA trip to Lebanon for the TN State Fair.
