Members of the community are invited to participate in the 2024 Big Read. The 13th annual Big Read will be held at noon on Thursday, July 25, at the Obion River Regional Library, 542 North Lindell Street in Martin, TN.

The book selected for the 13th year of The Big Read is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. Recently adapted into a critically acclaimed television series (A Gentleman in Moscow starring Ewan McGregor), the novel tells the story of a man who has been sentenced to spend the rest of us his life under house arrest in a luxury hotel in 1920s Russia.

Copies of the book can be checked out at area libraries. Additionally, you can read the e-book or listen to the audiobook through the Libby app, available through your smart phone.

The Big Read, which is held in July each year, is open to everyone. Whether it will be your thirteenth time attending or your first, you are welcome.

Ann Marie Norrid, Greenfield native and member of the Board of Trustees for the Ned R. McWherter Weakley County Library, will lead the discussion about this book. Norrid works for the Weakley County Finance Department and enjoys reviewing books on her Instagram account @annmariereads.

Other books that have been featured in past years are A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Bachman, My Antonia by Willa Cather, The Shoemaker’s Wife by Andriana Trigiani, Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese, A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, The Best Cook in the World by Rick Bragg, and Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

The West Tennessee version of the Big Read is sponsored by the Ned R. McWherter Weakley County library and was inspired in part by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read. They have the stated mission of “broadening our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.” The organizers of the 2024 Big Read promise to facilitate a valuable discussion of this beloved book.
